Sealing Natural Stone

Natural stone countertops like granite are known for their durability. They are resistant to scratches, chips, and temperature changes, making them a great choice for kitchens and bathrooms. No matter what type of natural stone your countertops are made of, to keep them looking nice it is important to take proper care of them.

One of the most important steps in maintaining natural stone countertops is sealing. Regular sealing can help protect the stone from stains, defend against scratches and scuffs, and preserve the value of the countertops over time.

The frequency of sealing depends on the type of stone you have. As a general guideline, we recommend resealing most stone surfaces every 2-3 years.

  • Granite countertops can be sealed annually or as needed due to their high porosity.

  • Quartz countertops (which are man-made), on the other hand, do not need to be sealed at all.

  • Marble countertops require more maintenance and should be resealed every 3-6 months.

Pros of Sealing Natural Stone

Sealing your natural stone is important because it offers several advantages.

  1. It helps protect against stains and can reduce acid erosion as well as the growth of bacteria.

  2. Sealing can also help to bind outdoor stone together and help it resist frost weathering, salt damage, and calcium buildup.

  3. Additionally, certain sealant coatings can provide various forms of surface feel, possibly adding to slip resistance.

Cons of Sealing Natural Stone

  1. Depending on the type of stone, it might need to be sealed every six months which can be costly. However, using an impregnating sealant may be able to extend that re-application to more like every one to three years.

  2. Even if the sealant is applied correctly, there is still a possibility that it won't fully protect against stains if the staining agent is not cleaned up in a timely fashion. It is important to quickly clean up any spills or liquids, especially on countertops.

  3. On floors, some surface sealants can show wear in areas that undergo the most foot traffic.

Natural stone is a popular choice for floors, countertops, bathrooms, and outdoor living areas because it's naturally beautiful and generally long-lasting. To maintain your stone’s appearance and retain its top form value, it is important to seal the stone when it needs it. Sealants can help protect the stone from stains, some minor erosion, and wear while enhancing its natural beauty.
